Spiritually Dry and Thirsty?

Has your spirit ever felt spiritually dry and thirsty? Have you had a drought in your walk with the Lord? During those times, it’s easy to slip into a ‘survival mode’ of not growing, just trying to sustain spiritual strength.

The sun and dry heat of Texas bears down on me. I feel hotter by the second. A simple outdoor task like walking to the street mailbox induces perspiration and weariness. It’s best to stay cool in the air-conditioned indoors.

In Psalm 63, the Psalmist cries out for God to revive his dry soul.

“O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water” (v.1).

Through recalling God’s glory and power, he is stirred to praise once again, though spiritually dry:

“I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you” (v.2).

He realizes that God is ever present.

Even in the drought, he tenaciously clings to God.

“Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me” (v.7-8).

When we experience dryness in our spirits, this can be a pattern for us.

1. Cry out to God. Recognize that He is the source of living water that can refresh our souls.
2. Praise Him. Recall the blessings God has given. Reflect on them and worship Him.
3. Cling tenaciously to the Lord in the midst of the drought. Hang on to His promises.

After a week of triple digit temps, relief came to the scorched ground. Storms passed through, giving way to steady rain with cooler temperatures. The crunchy heat-stressed grass is once again green. Flowers that struggled for survival a few days ago have blooms. The blessing of rain has refreshed the landscape.

Jesus gave words of hope for our thirsty souls in John 7:37:

“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”
